MicroRNAs (miRNA) are post-transcriptional regulators of cell proliferation, tissue differentiation, embryonic development, and apoptosis. Specific miRNA expression profiles may be characteristic of diseases or disease states and used as biomarkers. The identification of miRNA profiles has become important for streamlining drug development processes. The comparison of miRNA patterns from normal and disease samples; or contrasting miRNA profiles of the same sample in the presence or absence of a drug leads to a greater understanding of pathways and mechanisms of action.
